Golden Clusters, a creation of Portland winemaking artist Jeff Vejr, makes wine from old vines around the world.

This Semillon created by Golden Clusters, is light gold, whiffs of apricot and melon, with a touch of cream.  It wants to be a chardonnay but corrects you that it is Semillon.  With tantalizing acidity and  a long finish, this white was made for that apero hour when you are thinking about what to make for dinner or for when you have left your office and want to meet your friend for a glass.  I am fascinated by its lightness and freshness.

Made from the original 1966 plantings of Charles J Coury, meteorologist turned grape grower, at the David Hill vineyards.  Apparently the Old Vine Semillons are special because the 2021 scored 91 points from Wine Enthusiast and is sold out as are other vintages.

The vineyards were sold in 2022, so Golden Clusters can no longer procure the grapes.  Thus, this vendage was named “Final Proof.”   The profile is so complimentary to my mood that I just want to go out and purchase the remaining bottles to store away for another day.

I appreciate Jeff Vejr’s desire to make wine from old vines.  L.I.V.E. certified, unfiltered and vegan, these old vines prove to the world that Oregon can grow Semillon.
